Richmond Women speaking the unspoken outloud
Herstory through Music
WHEN: FRIDAY, March 28, 7 – 9 PM
WHERE: Crossroads Art Center
WHAT: Children often experience a disconnect from previous generations, but songs can be a powerful connector to help young people begin to understand what their elders experienced - lyrics pulsating stories of adversity, triumph, and redemption. The opening night of Beyond Barbie: Touchy Topics combines music and spoken word along with an opportunity for connection between the generations. In the afternoon before the performance, a group of adolescent girls will have a chance to workshop with the evening’s musicians to bond, to hear their stories, and to create their own song which they’ll perform that evening! For the performance itself, Narissa Bond , Rachel Leyco and others will perform empowering music then will have the girls from the workshop join them on stage to sing a song created that very day! Spoken word poets, young women just entering the adult world, will perform between songs and add their vision of the world to the evening. Join us on a lyrical path where music and spoken word can unite people of all ages, cultures, and heritages, kindling flames of hope, joy, and empowerment. March 28th, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Crossroads Art Center.
